Character Name: Vox
Series: Hazbin Hotel
Age: Mid 40s or thereabouts when he was alive, has been in Hell since his death in the 1950s.
From When?: Season 2 episode 8 “Curtain Call”

Inmate Justification:
Vox is not a good person. Even prior to dying and ending up in Hell, he did a LOT to end up there in the first place. Unlike some characters who appear to have had a pivotal moment of guilt which was enough to send them below, Vincent Whittman murdered a number of people when he was alive in his climb for fame and power and eventually became head of a cult. After his death, Vox continued much the same path in Hell, taking down obstacles in his way and relying on his charisma to ally himself with Valentino and Velvette while pursuing his own goals. He’s shown to be manipulative, cunning, and willing to throw any and everyone under a bus if it furthers his own ends.

While he is definitely not a great guy, Vox does have some possibility of redemption buried deep down. Being on the Barge and specifically having contact with some of the characters already present on the Barge would provide a backdrop that could enable him to maybe address some of the hurdles standing between him and working on (or at least acknowledging) his problems.

Arrival: He would 100% agree given the alternative. Plus it would also give him an idea for a new plan or two…

Abilities/Powers:
Immortality: As a sinner, Vox is a deceased human soul and therefore bound to spend eternity in Hell unless he is killed by angelic weaponry. He cannot age or be killed by physical harm, surviving even his head being removed in canon. On the Barge, this will be nerfed so that destroying his head will kill him and no angelic weaponry is required. I would like to keep the fact his head can be separated from his body without killing him, just rendering his body non-functional and basically turning him into an ipad for the lulz tho. This is not something he would willingly do himself but would be a fun nerf some time if/when he annoys the wrong people.

Demonic transformation: Vox is able to transform to a full demon form.

Electrical manipulation: Vox is able to manipulate electricity, generating it himself to shock others and do other things like start fires or cause power outages. He can also teleport this way through technology or lightning, allowing him to travel to locations through video links or smart watches and other technology or where there is open sky. This is limited in that he can’t go somewhere where there isn’t technology already and on the Barge will be further limited in that he won’t be able to reach locations which require warden access or special permissions. This will only include private areas such as other rooms with OOC permission and discussion with players. I would like to keep the electrical generation aspect but limit it in that he can’t electrocute someone to the point of serious harm or death, not unless he has extenuating circumstances (like Oscar inviting him swimming…)

Technological manipulation: This one is a bit more vague but essentially Vox seems able to control technology incredibly quickly and easily. This includes things like being able to display images and even duplications of himself on screen at will, sync unrelated TVs to display what he wants them to when he wants them to, and manipulate wires both in his vicinity and connected to his own body, allowing him to move around on them or use them as bondage for certain annoying radio deer demons. He can also flick information from screens to holograms around himself as a fun little way of reading or displaying information. For the most part I think this would be unaffected on the Barge, mostly being that I fully intend to discuss it all in detail with people before having Vox do anything like take over people’s devices or do anything with them.

Hologram generation: Vox is able to manifest holograms that have been shown to also be able to function as TVs and solid objects, although limited in that they have to be close to him. He has used these to create ‘angelic wings’, stairs that he walked on, a cape, a metal pointer, and several small screens to project hypnotic images through (more on that shortly). Most of these items are shown to be the same electric blue of his colour palette and clearly made by him, and I think on the Barge they will work mostly the same with the exception of making weapons, which will simply be images and unable to cause impact or fire projectiles.

Voice manipulation: In addition to generating holograms and being able to portray what he likes on monitors, Vox is shown to be able to flawlessly duplicate the sound of someone’s voice, able to mimic Charlie well enough to get her father to believe it was her. When doing this, his facial display tends to alter to mimic the person he’s imitating as well. This will also only be used with prior discussion for plot purposes.

Mind control: THE BIG ONE. Vox is capable of mind controlling people to a high degree, repeatedly mind controlling Angel Dust throughout the series in order to spy on Charlie and the hotel and even giving directions to Angel via text messages. This ability seems to be largely linked to his left eye and typically he switches focus to that when hypnotising people. He additionally is shown to combine the ability with his hologram manifestation to show images of his eye and hypnotise numerous sinners at onces to avoid them paying attention to things he doesn’t want them to. On the Barge I would like to retain this ability if possible (at least until he messes up to the point of a restriction being put on him lol) and it will of course be only used with discussion and plotting with everyone involved and notifying the mods through the player plot pages. I don’t foresee Vox doing much with it initially other than continuing to use Angel Dust to collect information and work towards a goal but if that changes, it will be discussed thoroughly beforehand.

Inmate Information:
At the core of his personality, Vox is something of a narcissist. He needs to be the centre of attention, the greatest and most powerful person in any given room and if he isn’t that, then he’s looking for ways to become it. This is apparent in his past life as Vincent – a weather man initially, Vincent continually sets his sights on those in better jobs within the network and takes what they have for himself, usually through killing them. When he reaches the limits of what the network can offer, he becomes a cult leader, styling himself as a god of television and promising to bring a new world era to those that follow him.

It doesn’t work of course, but the power is something he craves even decades after his death. In Hell he seeks power to rise as an overlord, joining with Valentino and Velvette to create the Vees and working to get them to rise to be some of the most powerful forces in Hell. But Vox’s drive to be the best is also his weakness; he is aware of how fickle power can be and even as an overlord, he’s not the best and greatest and those fears manifest in a need to prove himself to everyone constantly – and a vulnerability to criticism and suggestion that he isn’t as good as he thinks he is. While for the most part he can manage doubters there is one very notable exception.

Alastor. A perpetual chink in his armour and thorn in his side, Vox almost immediately loses his cool whenever the topic of the radio demon comes up. This has a lot to do with how much Alastor and his history touches on Vox’s core vulnerabilities and his perception of himself. Vox is also shown to be very proud in general, so when he made the genuine offer to be partners with Alastor decades ago only for the other demon to laugh in his face, his pride was damaged severely. Not only that, but Vox appears to have internalised Alastor’s words that there are no friends in Hell and his relationships with others, even within the Vees, tend to be very manipulative and superficial, especially when his focus is on his latest plan. While Velvette and Valentino seem like they get along, Vox is often shown as focusing on what the others can do for him and appeasing them to keep his power base stable and while he’s usually pretty good at that, he tends to slip in that area when his sights are set on other goals.

Which leads me into another point - how driven Vox is. In and of itself, it’s not a bad trait at all and when he sets his focus on a goal, he’s shown to be very effective at reaching it, identifying resources and ways to get people to work with him (even when they don’t want to). It’s more the kinds of goals he focuses on that are the problem. If he ever did manage to have a change of heart, he’d likely be a very formidable force on the side of redemption. It’s one of his major strengths, along with his charisma and people skills, that make him a potentially dangerous enemy or powerful ally.

Path to Redemption:
Vox has a LOT to work with if we were talking full redemption, but luckily the Barge doesn’t need to get quite that thorough or he might end up never leaving. I think something much, much more achievable for him would be learning to listen and respect others and not need to always be the centre of attention. It’s how his goals and plans often end up falling apart, with Vox himself ruining everything in his struggle to be the best and take all the credit. Realising that Valentino and Velvette do actually care about him and that his own past hurts had stopped him from having real friends and relationships would also be a massive step for him. Following on from his past, he very much internalised Alastor telling him it’s weak to have friends and constantly needling him about relying on others for support. So learning that isn’t the case and it’s a good thing to care about people would be a great start for him to make some bigger changes one day.

Wardening styles are a little harder to pin down because Vox is very, very charismatic and manipulative and will of course use that anyone who wardens him. Someone who at least is aware that he is probably going to say all the right things and not mean any of them would be a good start. Constantly challenging him isn’t likely to work either as he’s used to rolling with those kinds of resistances for the most part and being aware of the power imbalance would mean he’s more likely to put on a front of agreeing with whatever a warden tells him while not actually taking it on board at all. He might then work better with a warden who lets him decide for himself what he’s going to do (within reason) instead of trying to take control and approaches it more at a mutual level, although even so I think it will likely be slow going to build any sort of trust with Vox given his lengthy history.

Taking a leaf from the series, it might even be better for a warden to let him fuck up and get beaten down and then try to talk to him about modifying his actions, when he’s in more of a position to have no options but to listen.
